I made an intention of fasts but failed to keep them. Is there qadha? Question: If I make niyyah to keep Shawwal fasts but i cant keep them due to illness, do I need to make qadha for them? Answer: In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh. If you had simply expressed an interest in keeping the Shawwal fasts but did not make an intention on the day, then there is no Qadha due upon you.[1] However, if you broke a fast [other than a fardh fast in Ramadhan] having started it, then one qadha will be due.[2] And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best Abubakr Seedat Concurred by: Hanif Patel Mu‘adh Chati Asmar Akram Approved by: Mufti Siraj Sitponi Falahi
