Answer

Is male vasectomy permissible? Question: What is the ruling on vasectomies for males if they do not want to have anymore children? I’m hearing mixed opinions and I want to hear your opinion. Answer: In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh. Male sterilisation, also known as a vasectomy, is a surgical procedure to cut, seal or block the tubes that carry a man’s sperm, to permanently prevent future pregnancies. [1] If your intention is not wanting to have anymore children, then undertaking this or similar procedure would not be permissible. In principle, permanent procedures which render a man incapable of having children, such as male vasectomies and female tubectomies, are forbidden in Islam. [2] Although there is medical evidence to suggest a high degree of reversibility for this procedure, a risk of permanence still remains. [3] Additionally, it also involves incorrectly altering the creation of Allah Ta‘ala. [4] In addition, from amongst the foremost reasons of marriage is procreation, nurturing children and bringing them up in a righteous manner. We should understand that everything happens with the will of Allah; and reliance upon Allah is vital. Therefore, one should remain far away from that which is impermissible; and leave such matters to the decree of the Almighty. [5]
