Is animal rennet halal? Question: Is rennet from animals halaal? What conditions must they fulfil to be considered halaal? I have seen that according to imam Abu Hanifah rennet from animals is allowed? Please could I get clarification. Answer: In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh. It is important to ascertain the source of the rennet. If the rennet is from a halāl animal (e.g. a calf) then it is halāl too (regardless of whether the animal was slaughtered according to Islam or not), according to the preferred position in the Hanafi school. However, if it is from a harām or unlawful animal (e.g. swine) then it will be rendered harām.
