Fasting during illness and weakness

Answer

Fasting during illness and weakness QUESTION: Assalamualaykum, My question is regarding some health issues that I have. I have a medical condition called Neutropenia which is a very low immune deficiency where by my neutrophils in white blood cells are very low. I am given gcsf injections every 2 weeks to boost the immune system. It is not always guaranteed that it does as the cells fluctuate as the please. I also have underactive thyroid, fybromyalgia and under investigation for palputations. I missed the first couple of fasts due to feeling very weak and ill from injection given on Friday and general weakness. I did wake up for suhoor today, still feeling the same but have kept a fast today.

My question is what is the advice for this as I am feeling weak still? My family usually knows my situation with my health and know when I am at that weak stage and their advice is to get myself felling stronger to then continue fasting.  Normally every year , I do manage to fast normally Alhamdulillah as much as I can and take injections too. Only this time I just feel weaker.

Please inform me as soon as possible, as to what I should do with my fasting today. Jazakallah khair.   ANSWER: In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh. Following consultation with a medical professional (ideally, a practising Muslim doctor), you may not fast if you strongly feel that you will become extremely weak and your health will deteriorate by fasting. Also, you may want to make up for the missed obligatory fasts when the days are shorter.

May Allah cure you and assist you in your predicament. Ameen.   And Allah knows best Abu Bakr Seedat Concurred by: Hanif Patel Muadh Chati Asmar Akram Approved by: Mufti Siraj Sitponi Falahi
