Reciting Surah al-Fatihah behind the Imam QUESTION: I have a question reciting surah fatiha behind imam in loud or silent prayers. Should we recite surah fatiha behind imam? What are four school of thoughts on this issue ? ANSWER: In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh. According to the Hanafi school of thought, the recitation of surat ‘l-Fatihah of the Imam will suffice for the follower; thus, the follower should not recite it [1], regardless of whether he is following the Imam in loud or silent prayers.
