Holding a space in the masjid

Answer

Holding a space in the masjid

Question: We have an issue in our local masjid whereby some individuals place their prayer mats in the prayer area (jamat khana) and then do not return for some time in between prayers. We are not sure if they are still in the masjid or outside, although they all return closer to when the jamat starts. As a result, people arriving earlier are not able to use their places. Is this permissible?       Answer: In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. It is not permissible to hold spaces in such a manner that the area becomes specific for the individual. Nevertheless, if one has to leave due to a necessity e.g. performing wudhu, then one is more rightful of that place once they return.    Hence, it is incorrect if people are spending time outside the masjid (jamat khana) talking, whilst their prayer mats lay inside for extended periods of time.  They should be reminded that the reward for the masjid is inside the masjid (jamat khana); and if they are leaving the masjid, they should remove their prayer mats first.  [See References below] And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best Concurred by: Hanif Yusuf | Mu‘adh Chati | Asmar Akram Approved by:  Mufti Siraj Sitponi Falahi
